I rode up to the Waynesboro Public Library in Augusta County yesterday. It is located at 600 South Wayne Avenue; Waynesboro, Virginia 22980, phone number 540-942-6746. They have a nice genealogy room but you have to register at the front desk to gain access. The librarian has to walk you to the room, unlock the door and let you go inside. They have a copy machine in the room and you pay ten-cents per copy before you leave the library - on the honor system.
There are lots of local maps, including insurance maps, and there are a couple original newspapers hanging around the room in frames. I noticed a few, bound newspaper editions from the 1840s or 1850s. I think it might have been the Valley Virginian but I thought it was the Union something...I cannot remember. They were at the bottom of a pile of old material and I did not want to move them yesterday.
The purpose of my trips was to view the index of burials for Riverview Cemetery (and I found that just fine). I also noticed that they had books of obituary clippings from the 1930s to the present. The library also has tons of books from the surround counties - you will find much more than Waynesboro or Augusta history in their genealogy room. I was fairly impressed with their holdings and will probably end up there again one day.
