Genealogy Fair at the Family Life Center of Fincastle, Virginia, October 11, 2008

I wanted to pass this along. I am going to try to attend but I do not know that for certain at this point...

"October 11, 2008 - Genealogy Fair being held at Fincastle in the Family Life Center at the corner of Church & Academy St, Fincastle, Va. Hours 9-3 . Plenty of free parking available.

Our speakers are, Pam Young will talk about the holdings in the Virginia Room at the Main Library in Roanoke on Jefferson St., The Botetourt Historical Society will tell us about early Botetourt County and their holdings in the museum, Loretta Caldwell will tell about researching Botetourt County Courthouse Records, Susan Mason will give a short lesson on writing your personal history, Harry Gleason will talk about the history of Buchanan, & Sally Eads about Colonial Women.. The Botetourt Genealogy Club will be showing photos from the cemetery photograph project all day. There will be a book vendor with local authors and Botetourt history. Botetourt Genealogy Club, Botetourt Historical Society & Museum, Alleghany County, Rockbridge County, and Bedford County Historical & Genealogy Societies along with several about 20 researchers have tables with many Botetourt County surnames .. There will be a large display of churches, schools and people in the African American Communities. A tour of Fincastle will be provided, weather permitting. We will have some door prizes for both the vendors and the public. The event is Free. Donations accepted.

Friends of the Fincastle Library will serve food. Funds from the sale will be earmarked for the Fincastle Library Genealogy Room.

The Courthouse is open 8:30 - 4:30 Monday - Friday. The library is open 9-9 Monday & Thursday, 9-6 Tuesday & Wednesday, 9-5 on Friday. Normal Saturday hours are 9-1, however the day of the fair the library will be open 9-3. The Museum is open 7 days a week. 10-2 except Sunday 12-4.

Book Review: "1815 Directory of Virginia Landowners Botetourt County Virginia" with last name index

The following is a summary of Roger G. Ward's "1815 Directory of Virginia Landowners Botetourt County Virginia". This is a paperback print by New Papyrus Co., Inc. of Athens, Georgia and contains 51 pages.

In 1782 the General Assembly of Virginia enacted new tax laws which created within each county an enumeration of land and certain personal property. These early land tax laws required a tax commissioner in each district of a county to record a list of the names of persons owning land or town lots, the quantity of land owned and its value, and the amount of tax owed. By 1813, a brief geographic description (usually citing an adjacent stream, road, or other landmark) was required; in 1814, the distance and direction from the courthouse for each parcel was also added to the tax rolls.

This work is an alphabetical listing of all 1815 landowners found in the county, as well as the accompanying description of the location of the said property. They have not included the number of acres, taxes assessed, or any transactions between landowners which may have been noted on the tax rolls; also, in many cases the geographic location was provided as "adjacent to John Smith", etc. and, while useful many times to a genealogist, was considered to be beyond the objectives of this project. The reader is encouraged to consider the information here-in as an "outline" of early landowners in Virginia rather than a "text" due to the year-to-year variation in information provided to the clerk (or recorded by the clerk), omissions, lack of "identifiers" to determine if "same name" was also "same person" within a district or across districts, marginal quality/clarity (in a few cases) of the microfilm copy, and, not least, errors on the part of either the original clerks or the current author while transcribing.

Some of the approaches to utilizing the 1815 landowner information include:

• Observe distinct clusters of the same surname within a county in order to clarify the common surnames such as "Smith", "Anderson", etc.
• Identify non-resident landowners and their county (or state) of residence (these people often being former residents of the current county)
• Determine neighbors with different surnames (often being relatives)
• Use the 1815 info as a "bridge" from the 18th and 19th century deed/will books to the 17th and 18th century land grants/patents in the county
• Evaluate the 1810 to 1840 census information which generally grouped neighbors
• Substitute this information for missing deed/will books in the "burned" counties; and, clarify/enhance vague deed/will information in the counties with more complete records

Each entry is listed as: Surname, name, personal identifiers (if any); location/place-name of land; miles/direction from the 1815 courthouse. If multiple owners are listed for a property, the listing is duplicated under each of the owner's surnames (i.e "Smith and Brown" is also listed as "Brown, --see Smith"); when multiple owners share a common surname, the property is only listed once. When a landowner had land at more than one location/place-name, the miles/direction listing for each parcel is in the same sequence as the location listing (i.e. James RV, Slate CK; 12N, 5SW.). In the few cases where a landowner had "many" parcels, the miles/direction notation is attached to the location listing (i.e. Sandy RV- 5NE, Willow CK-7S, etc.)

A Bunch of Phillips and/or Philips Obituaries, Part II

These are a bunch of obituaries for the Philips family, mostly of central Virginia, namely Hanover, Henrico and the city of Richmond. They were part of a research project I did several years ago so I might as well post them here. They are in no particular order. There may also be some associated notes for different people. If you are interested in anyone here, let me know as I probably have a lot on them.

Richmond Times-Dispatch, December 25, 1919:
"SNEAD - Died, at the residence of her husband, 3207 West Cary Street, Lillie Philips Snead, wife of Leslie Snead. Funeral from the above residence Friday, December 26, 2:30 P. M. Interment in Riverview Cemetery."

Lillian is buried in plat M, section 15, division 3, grave 1 of Riverview Cemetery.

Richmond Times-Dispatch, January 11, 1948:
"LESLIE SNEAD - A funeral service for Leslie Snead, 78 husband of the late Lillie Phillips Snead, who died Thursday at his home 3200 Hanes Ave. will be held at 2 P.M. today at the Woody Funeral Home, with burial in Riverview Cemetery. Born in Norfolk March 14, 1870, Mr. Snead was the son of the late Evan and Mrs Sarah Davis Snead. He was a member of Pine Street Baptist Church and of Metropolitan Lodge, No 11,Masons. He is survived by two daughters. Mrs. Harry Richardson,of Richmond, and Mrs. Wesley Holmes, of Schenectady, N.Y.; two sons, Oscar Snead, of Richmond, and Irving Snead of Washington; two sisters, Mrs. Josiah Warriner, of Richmond, and Mrs. Harry Forstmann, of Lexington, and 12 grandchildren."

Richmond Times-Dispatch, January 11, 1948:
"SNEAD - Died Thursday, January 8, 1948 at 3:30 P.M., at his residence, 3200 Hanes Avenue. Leslie Snead, in the 78th year of his age, husband of the late Lillie Phillips Snead and son of the late Evan and Sarah Davis Snead. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Harry Richardson, of this city, and Mrs. Wesley Holmes of Schenectady, N.Y.; two sons, Oscar D. Snead, of this city, and Irving N. Snead, of Washington D.C.; two sisters, Mrs. Josiah Warriner of this city , and Mrs. Harry Frostman, of Lexington, Va; also five granddaughters and seven greatgrandsons. The remains rest at Woody’s Funeral Home, where the services will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Interment in Riverview."

Leslie is buried in plat M, section 15, division 3, grave 3 of Riverview Cemetery.

Richmond Times-Dispatch, July 29, 1936:
"OSCAR R. PHILLIPS - Funeral services for Oscar R. Phillips, who died Monday at his home, 3135 Grayland Avenue, will be held at 3 o'clock this afternoon at Immanuel Baptist Church. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Cora Phillips; his daughter, Julia G. Phillips; his mother, Mrs. O. E. Phillips; a brother, E. B. Phillips, and a sister, Miss Mabel Phillips."

Richmond Times-Dispatch, July 29, 1936:
"PHILLIPS - Died suddenly at his residence, 3135 Grayland Avenue, July 27, 1936, Oscar R. Phillips. He is survived by his widow, Cora J. Phillips, and one daughter, O. E. Phillips, one brother Edwin B. Phillips, and one sister, Mabel Phillips. Funeral from Immanuel Baptist Church Wednesday at 3 P. M. Interment in Riverview."

Oscar's death was sudden but he had a heart condition for about a year. He is buried in plat P, section 25, division 1, grave 1 of Riverview Cemetery.

Richmond Times-Dispatch, November 9, 1982:
"PHILLIPS - Cora D. Phillips, died at a local nursing home November 7, 1982. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. William V. Harvell; one sister, Mrs. C. L. Southard of Tappahannock; one grandchild, Bryant Keith Harvell; several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Phillips was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. Remains rest at the Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., where services will be held Tuesday at 11 A.M. with Interment in Riverview. If desired, memorial gifts may be made to the Braille Circulating Library."

Cora is buried in plat P, section 25, division 1, grave 2 of Riverview Cemetery.

Book Review: "Rockbridge County Virginia Marriages 1778-1850" with Last Name Index M-Z

The following is a summary of the last name index, M-Z, of "Rockbridge County Virginia Marriages 1778-1850" by Dorthie and Edwin Kirkpatrick, 443 pages, index, figures, map. Rockbridge County's creation in 1778 from portions of Augusta and Botetourt counties was part of a flurry of new county organizations and older county subdivisions during the Revolutionary period. Despite the war, the frontier was moving inexorably westward, and the new county of Rockbridge represented an area now more densely settled and requiring its own polity. A total of 4,785 marriages have been extracted directly from courthouse records as well as from newspaper and other published sources; these references include parents' name, bondsmen, ministers' names and their denominations. This is a soft cover reprint of a 1985 original, printed by New Papyrus Co. of Athens, Georgia.

Book Review: "Rockbridge County Virginia Marriages 1778-1850" with Last Name Index A-L

The following is a summary of the last name index, A-L, of "Rockbridge County Virginia Marriages 1778-1850" by Dorthie and Edwin Kirkpatrick, 443 pages, index, figures, map. Rockbridge County's creation in 1778 from portions of Augusta and Botetourt counties was part of a flurry of new county organizations and older county subdivisions during the Revolutionary period. Despite the war, the frontier was moving inexorably westward, and the new county of Rockbridge represented an area now more densely settled and requiring its own polity. A total of 4,785 marriages have been extracted directly from courthouse records as well as from newspaper and other published sources; these references include parents' name, bondsmen, ministers' names and their denominations. This is a soft cover reprint of a 1985 original, printed by New Papyrus Co. of Athens, Georgia.

Rockbridge County Virginia Marriages 1778-1850

Elmer Whitfield Stennett (April 30, 1879 - July 8, 1953)

Elmer stood five feet, nine inches tall, weighed 140 pounds with a dark complexion, brown eyes and dark brown hair. He was born in Rockbridge and spent time in Goochland, Buena Vista and Dinwiddie before moving his family to Richmond, following work on the railroad.

Richmond Times-Dispatch, Richmond, Virginia, July 11, 1953:
"STENNETT - Passed away at a local hospital, Wednesday night July 8, 1953, Elmer W. Stennett of 1851 Southlawn Ave. He is survived by one son, Rev. R. D. Stennett, of Emporia, Va.; one brother, Hayden Stennett, of Maidens, Va., and two grandsons, William W. and R. D. Stennett, Jr., also of Emporia, Va. Remains rest at the Sutherland-Brown Funeral Home, Boulevard and Kensington Avenue, where services will be held Saturday at 3 P. M. Interment Oakwood."

Richard D. Stinnet & Mary Jane Carter Stinnet of Botetourt, Rockbridge & Goochland Counties

Richard D. Stinnet [1]. He was born on 01 Feb 1830 in Amherst, Virginia, USA[2]. He died on 24 Nov 1917 in Maidens, Goochland, Virginia, USA[2]. Burial on 26 Nov 1917 in Buchanan, Botetourt, Virginia, USA[2]. Cause of Death was bronchial pneumonia[2].

Richard and Mary were married by Lewis P. Fellers, pastor of Zion Hill Baptist Church in Fincastle, Virginia. They lived along Purgatory Creek, a few miles to the northeast of Buchanan in Botetourt County. Richard was an uneducated farm laborer who never learned to sign his name. The couple had at least seven children, three girls and four boys: Virginia, Emma Elizabeth, Ada W., John H., Richard Haden, Charles O. and Elmer Whitfield.

Richard served as a private in the Botetourt Artillery during the Civil War and was captured at the Battle of Port Gibson, Mississippi on May 1, 1863. He was subsequently sent to prison in Alton, Illinois but was released during a prisoner exchange one month later. He then became a recruiter for the Confederate Army, stationed in Richmond, Virginia, and served until his unit disbanded.

The Stinnet family moved from the Buchanan area to Buffalo of Rockbridge County around 1880. By 1900 Richard and Mary were living with their son Richard in Maidens of Goochland County. The elder Richard was suffering from the infirmities of old age and had a weak back. He was unable to work and applied for a military pension in 1903.

Mary passed away before 1910 and Richard died from pneumonia in 1917. He was buried in Buchanan, presumably in Fairview Cemetery, but neither he nor Mary have a marker in that graveyard.

Mary Jane Carter is the daughter of Joseph Carter and Belsora Elizabeth Lavender[3]. She was born Nov 1838 in Botetourt, Virginia, USA[3, 4]. She died Bet. Jun 1900–Apr 1910[4, 5]. Richard D. Stinnet and Mary Jane Carter were married on 16 Feb 1854 in Botetourt, Virginia, USA[6].

Library of Virginia Chancery Records Scanned, More Coming

I found something hot yesterday that I did not know existed. I was almost ashamed when I found it, for the fact that I did not realize it was there all of this time. I consider myself an expert on the holdings of the Library of Virginia, I even volunteered there for almost a year. I just could not believe that I missed their project for scanning chancery court records. These are free, online records for anyone to use. Be warned that the records can be very long, some more than 1,000 pages, and they can get very addictive!

Here is the deal, the Library has scanned several counties and are working on the rest. If you do not know, a chancery cause is basically a court case where there is no clear cut law to decide who is right or wrong in a civil case. All of the evidence is gathered and presented to a judge who rules on that evidence. This can include old wills, deeds, Bible records, letters, anything to help win your case. I will give an example of a chancery cause that I found in my family...

Ann's husband died and she sold twenty acres of their farm to one of their freed slaves. Twenty years later, after Ann's death, one of her children decided that they wanted the twenty acres back but the freed slave had sold the land to a white family ten years ago. They all go to chancery court and the judge rules that Ann had no right to sell the property because 2/3 of it belonged to the heirs of her husband. Furthermore the freed slaves had no right to purchase property so the sale was doubly invalid. The white family had to give the land back to Ann's estate and had no recourse since the original sale was not valid. That is a true chancery cause as no clear-cut law applied to the situation. It took a judge's understanding of the laws to come to a conclusion.

Anyway, the Library of Virginia has already scanned the causes for the following areas:
