THOMAS W. NEWELL (c 1818 - c 1849) SUSSEX COUNTY, VIRGINIA

I am searching for the parents of Thomas W. Newell, born circa 1818 and died before March 1849.

Thomas married Rebecca Virginia Wrenn, who was born Aug 31, 1825, in Sussex County to Thomas Wrenn and Rebecca Gilliam, and died November 29, 1892, in Washington, DC. Thomas W. Newell and Rebecca Virginia Wrenn had two sons who were born in Sussex County:

• George Waverly Newell (born July 1844 and died January 14, 1926, in Washington, DC)
• Alphonso Murat Newell (born circa 1846 and died August 11, 1907, in Moundsville prison)

Alphonso Murat Newell was serving a prison term in Moundsville, WV, for an assault conviction. Nothing is known about the origin of Alphonso's unusual given names. Much is known, however, about the lives of both George W. and Alphonso Murat Newell.

Much is also known about Rebecca Wrenn's forbearers, the Gilliam and Wrenn families in early Virginia. Rebecca Virginia remarried James Harrison Brooks, a printer, in 1858 (James H. Brooks was born Oct 2, 1835; died August 29, 1907, in Washington, DC).

There is no information, however, about who the parents of Thomas W. Newell might have been. There is only a very little amount of information available for Thomas W. Newell:

• Thomas is included in the 1840 US census for Sussex County, Virginia, and in the Sussex County marriage register, marrying Rebecca Virginia Wrenn on January 23, 1840. They were married by Rev. Thomas B. Creath, with William H. Lanier as the witness. William H. Lanier was an in-law, having married Mary Wrenn (Rebecca's sister) in 1825. I found another Lanier family connection with the marriage record of Edward Newell and Lucy Lanier on March 27, 1788, in adjoining Prince George County.
• Thomas W. Newell was also listed in the Sussex County personal property tax list for the years 1840, 1841, and 1842. Before that, a William T. Newell was listed in the Sussex personal property tax lists for the years 1837, 1836, and 1835. There are no earlier Sussex County records which show any Newell family members living there, with the exception of Elizabeth Newell who was listed in the 1782 Sussex County personal property tax list.
• Other than that, a few Newells appeared in some of the earlier Sussex wills and in other records as witnesses, but not necessarily as Sussex County Residents.
• I know that Thomas W. Newell was not present by March 1849, because he was not included in Thomas Wrenn's will, which was written then. I have looked into the possibility that Thomas W. Newell might have abandoned his family, but I have found no evidence of this (there was another Thomas W. Newell in NC in the 1870 census, but I do not believe that it is the same person).
• Rebecca Virginia Wrenn/Newell, along with her sons George W. and Alphonso, were listed in the 1850 census living with her father, Thomas Wrenn, with no sign of Thomas W. Newell.

While there is little or no documentation of the Newell family having lived in Sussex County before the 1830s, there is much evidence of the Newell family having lived in Prince George County for a long time.

• In the 1810,1820, and 1830 census in Prince George, I found Benjamin, Thomas Sr., Thomas Jr., William, and James Newell listed.
• In the 1804 personal property tax list for Prince George, I found Benjamin, Thomas, Edward, William, James, Richard C., Daniel, and Isham Newell listed. There is also an extant will for Edward Newell (Wife Katherine) who died October 21, 1791, with children Rebecca, James, and Peter.
• I also found a "Lucy Newell, guardian of Edward Newell's children" included in the 1798-1800 court records in Prince George, probably the mother Lucy Lanier Newell who married Edward in 1788.
• I also found a Thomas "Nuell" as a beneficiary of Thomas Daniel's will in Prince George in 1807.
• The "Historical Record of Virginians in the Revolution" by John Gwaithmet (Dietz Press 1938) lists Thomas Newell Sr. of Prince George having died on Jan 19, 1833, at age 78. Based on this information, and the census, Thomas Jr. of Prince George could have been a possible father to Thomas W., (the 3rd?) born circa 1818.
• Another possibility for a father is the George W. Newell who was listed in the 1840 census in Prince George, as well as in a number of Prince George land and personal property tax records from the 1830s and 1840s. According to the census, he was born approximately 1805. George W. Newell was also listed in the 1850 slave schedule census in Prince George County.

I have found a number of Newell family members listed from a number of sources, and I will list them here:

• George Newell m Rebecca Pate, 1768; George Newell held 150 acres in James City County in 1768, according to "Adventures of Purse and Person" written by John F. Dorman in 1956.

I have checked as well as I can the local parishes, including Bristol, Albemarle, and Southwark. I have found no information for Martin Brandons Parish. As far as I have been able, I have found no information for the Newell family included in any of the extant records for these parishes, but some of the related families, especially the Gilliam family, have records in the parish books.

In general, I have checked Surry County: marriages 1768-1853, wills late 1700s to 1840, land records, and court records. I've also done essentially the same research in Prince George (records that remain extant) and in Sussex County as well.

The Newell name can be spelled a number of ways, and indeed was misspelled in old Virginia. I have looked for Knewell, Nuell, Nowell, Knowle, Neville, etc. with mixed results.

Any additional information, ideas how to proceed, or any clues that might lead to information regarding the identity of Thomas W. Newell's parents would all be welcome.

A Bunch of Phillips and/or Philips Obituaries, Part I

These are a bunch of obituaries for the Philips family, mostly of central Virginia, namely Hanover, Henrico and the city of Richmond. They were part of a research project I did several years ago so I might as well post them here. They are in no particular order. There may also be some associated notes for different people. If you are interested in anyone here, let me know as I probably have a lot on them.

Richmond Dispatch, July 4, 1889:
"PHILLIPS - Died, on Wednesday, July 3, 1889, at 12:15 A.M., at the residence of her husband, Mrs. ALICE G., daughter of Miles T. Phillips, Esq., and beloved wife of Oscar E. Phillips, in the forty-first year of her age. She leaves a husband and four children to mourn their loss.
Blessed are those who die in the Lord. Funeral will take place from Pine-Street Baptist church TO-DAY, July 4th, at 11 A.M."

Alice died from neurasthenia, a neurotic condition accompanied by exhaustion, depression, inattentiveness, loss of appetite, insomnia and gastrointestinal problems.

Richmond Dispatch, July 27, 1898:
"PHILLIPS - Died, Tuesday morning, July 26, 1898, MILES T. PHILLIPS, in the 75th year of his age. Funeral from Seventh-Street Christian church THURSDAY AFTERNOON at 5[?] o'clock. Boston and Arlington (N. J.) papers please copy."

There is a bronze marker at the head of Miles' grave that reads as follows:
"Miles Turpin Phillips - 1st First Vice President of the Virginia Society Sons of the American Revolution Son of Mourning Phillips of the 2nd Virginia Regiment Continental Line."

Miles is buried in section 10, lot 19 of Hollywood Cemetery.

Richmond Times-Dispatch, May 13, 1909:
"PHILLIPS - Entered into life eternal Tuesday, May 11, at 3:55 A. M. at the residence of her grandson, Rev. P. A. Arthur, 1247 West Cary Street, MRS. ALICE ELIZABETH PHILLIPS, relict of Captain Miles T. Phillips, in the eightieth year of her age. Funeral private from the residence THIS (Thursday) AFTERNOON at 5 o'clock."

Alice is buried in section 10, lot 19 of Hollywood Cemetery.

Richmond Times-Dispatch, September 10, 1962:
"EDWIN B. PHILLIPS SR. - Edwin Brock Phillips Sr., formerly of 123 Granite ave., died Sunday at a local hospital. He was a retired employe [sic.] of Richmond Hotels, Inc. He was a member of First English Lutheran Church and St. John’s Lodge No. 36, AF&AM. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Stuart R. Kellam, Mrs. Thelma Prescott, Mrs. Charles E. Rose and Mrs. L. F. Trevillian and two sons, Edwin Brock, Jr. and Richard A. Phillips. A funeral service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bennett Funeral Home, with burial in Riverview Cemetery."

Richmond Times-Dispatch, September 11, 1962:
"PHILLIPS - Entered into rest at a local hospital, Sept. 9, 1962, Edwin Brock Phillips, Sr., formerly of 123 Granite Ave. He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Stuart R. Kellam, Mrs. Thelma Prescott, Mrs. Charles E. Rose and Mrs. L. F. Trevilian; two sons, Edwin Brock, Jr., and Richard A. Phillips; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Remains rest at Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., where services will be held at 3:30 P. M. Tuesday. Interment in Riverview."

Edwin is buried in plat G, section 42, division 3, grave 2 of Riverview Cemetery.

Richmond Times-Dispatch, September 25, 1950:
"MRS. EDWIN B. PHILLIPS, SR - Mrs. Grace Dance Phillips, of 123 Granite Ave., wife of Edwin B. Phillips, Sr., died Sunday in a Richmond hospital. Besides her husband, she is survived by four daughters, two sons, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements were incomplete last night."

Richmond Times-Dispatch, September 26, 1950:
"MRS. EDWIN B. PHILLIPS - A funeral service for Mrs. Grace Dance Phillips, wife of Edwin B. Phillips, Sr., of 123 Granite Ave., who died Sunday at a Richmond hospital, will be held at 2 P.M. Tuesday at First English Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery."

Richmond Times-Dispatch, September 26, 1950:
"PHILLIPS - Died at a local hospital 9:40 P. M. Sept. 24, 1950, Mrs. Grace Dance Phillips, of 123 Granite Ave. She is survived by her husband, Edwin B. Phillips; four daughters, Mrs. S. R. Kellam, Mrs. J. T. Prescott; Mrs. Chas E. Rose, Jr., and Mrs. Lorin T. Trevillian; two sons, E. B., Jr., and R. A. Phillips; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, also two sisters, Mrs. Raymond Burley and Mrs. Chas. Mayes. The remains rest at the Joseph W. Bliley Funeral Home. Funeral from First English Lutheran Church, Tuesday at 2 P. M. Interment Riverview Cemetery."

Grace is buried in plat G, section 42, division 3, grave 1 of Riverview Cemetery.

Richmond Times-Dispatch, September 26, 1953:
"MISS MABEL PHILLIPS - Miss Mabel Phillips, of 123 Granite Ave., died Thursday in a Richmond hospital. She is survived by one brother, Edwin B. Phillips, of Richmond, and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2:30 P. M. Saturday at Bennett’s Funeral Home, with burial in Hollywood Cemetery."

Richmond Times-Dispatch, September 26, 1953:
"PHILLIPS - Entered into eternal rest at a local hospital, Thursday, Sept. 24, 1953, Miss Mabel Phillips. She is survived by one brother, Edwin B. Phillips, and several nieces and nephews. Remains rest at the Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., where services will be held Saturday, September 26, at 2:30 P.M. Interment Hollywood."

Mabel is buried in section 10, lot 19 of Hollywood Cemetery. I believe that Mabel was an inmate of Western State Hospital in 1920. This facility, located in the Staunton/Augusta County area, was a mental hospital.

Richmond Times-Dispatch, July 21, 1972:
"JONES - Mrs. Evelyn P. Jones, widow of George L. Jones, died Wednesday, July 19, 1972, in the hospital in South Hill. She is survived by one son, Dr. George L. Jones. Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Saturday in the South Hill United Methodist Church with burial in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends between the hours of 2 and 4 and 7 and 9 P.M. Friday, at Crews Funeral Home."

Richmond-Times Dispatch, c. March 1943:
"G. L. JONES, OF SOUTH HILL, DIES HERE - MASONIC ORDER TO CONDUCT RITES - SOUTH HILL - George L. Jones, 52, husband of Evelyn P. Jones, died Sunday in a Richmond hospital. He was a member of South Hill Methodist Church and was active in Virginia Masonic circles, at the time of his death being worthy patron of Loyalty Chapter 48, Order of the Eastern Star and past master of South Hill Lodge 297 A. F. and A. M. In addition, he was a member of the Royal Arch Chapter 59, of Victoria, and was long employed by the Southern Railway, serving as agent at South Hill when he died. Surviving are his wife and one son, George L. Jones, Jr., of South Hill; two sisters, Mrs. Edward Denby, of Boydton, and Mrs. Carrie May Jones, of Richmond, and one aunt, Miss Mary R. Jones, of Boydton. Funeral services will be held at 4 P. M. Monday at the graveside in Oakwood Cemetery in South Hill, with the Rev. Ira Astin officiating. Masonic Lodge 297 will observe the last rites of Masonry."

Richmond Times-Dispatch, October 6, 1976:
"MOSLEY - William L. Mosley Sr., died Tuesday, October 5, 1976, at his residence, 2838 Broad Rock Rd., Apt. 1. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Hattie Elma Mosley; daughter, Marietta Conklin; son, William L. Mosley Jr.; all of Richmond; three sisters, Mrs. Elsie Kain of Norfolk, Mrs. Esther Copley of South Boston, and Mrs. Evelyn Thompson of Courtland; and one granddaughter. Funeral services 11 A.M. Thursday at the Watkins-Cooper Funeral Home, Clarksville, Va. Interment Presbyterian Church, Boydton, Va."

She was born September 17, 1886 in Manchester, Chesterfield County, Virginia, and died August 30, 1974 in Richmond, Henrico County, Virginia.

Notes for ANDREW LOVING VASS:
Andrew was tall and slender with blue eyes, dark brown hair and a soft voice. He was devoted to his mother and sisters, walking around with the license in his pocket for a long time before marrying. He worked for Trediger Iron Works as a puddler and drank heavily until the birth of his last child, commenting that he could have bought the finest house in Richmond if he had back all of the money he spent on booze. Andrew injured his hand and become a trash man, walking through the streets of Richmond with his mule and cart, collecting garbage until his retirement.

Notes for BESSIE MAY JARVIS:
Bessie’s first pregnancy resulted in a fetal demise. She had three young children die and slammed her breast in a car door, leading to its removal. As an older woman, Bessie was taking off her gown and bent over, lowering herself onto a bedpost and punctured her eyeball. Bessie’s heart hardened, becoming so strict that she would not allow her teenage children to leave their front yard. She was not sociable and did not care for small children. Bessie became so stingy that if she had a piece of fruit, she would let it go bad before she shared it with you.

Notes for LOUISE E. VASS:
According to Hazel Vass Hargrove, Louise was in her highchair while her brother, Herbert, was climbing on its rails. The chair fell backwards and Louise hit her head on the floor. The baby went into convulsions and died from the trauma. This is contrary to the cause of death as pneumonia listed on her death certificate.

Hazel attended school until the fifth grade. At the age of fifteen, she left home and went to live with her best friend and future sister-in-law, Mattie Brock. Hazel worked at the Southern Dog Biscuit Company for a few years but later opted to stay home with her children and babysat others. She loved animals, raised African violets and lived alone during her widowhood.

Notes for CARLTON EDWARD BROCK:
Edward delivered messages for Western Union, worked at the Broad Street train station, drove for the Yellow Cab Company, painted for the Jefferson Hotel and worked as a janitor at the Cripple Children's Hospital. On the side, he wrote numbers and sold liquor during the prohibition period. Edward was a lady's man, so much that one woman came to his funeral and told his widow that "you may have had his children, but I loved him."

Bessie was blind at the time Margaret was burned. She had just undergone surgery to remove cataracts from both eyes. Margaret was in the house and picked up a long stick match from inside the hearth. It caught her dress on fire and Margaret swallowed the flames, scorching her mouth and throat. One of the other children called for Bessie, who then desperately tried to save her child in vain.

On the morning of November 10, 1930, William missed the school bus. He ran and jumped onto the door ledge of the moving bus to get the driver's attention. William slipped and fell beneath its wheels and was crushed. He was taken to Memorial Hospital where he died four days later. It was a very painful and traumatic death.
